Why Shouldn’t I Use Regular Shampoo On My Beard?
Your skin produces sebum, a greasy substance, to coat and protect hair and the hair follicle. An accumulation of sebum causes hair strands to stick together, making your hair look dull and greasy. Particles such as dust and pollen are attracted and stick to it. Because sebum, like any oil, is hydrophobic (repels water)it cannot be rinsed away.
The detergents in shampoo (detergents just like you would find in dishwasher soap, or laundry soap) lower the surface tension of water making it easier to bind with oil. Because shampoo dissolves in water, it can be easily rinsed away carrying sebum oil and any other oil from styling products along with it.
Using regular shampoo on your beard will cause the hairs to become dry, frizzy and more likely to break or split. This is why it’s important to use a beard shampoo.
Isn’t Using Beard Oil Enough?
You might be thinking, “I’m already using beard oil, so I shouldn’t need to use a special shampoo too”. Beard shampoo is designed to clean your beard without stripping away the natural oils and the more oils we can get into our beards the better. Using a beard shampoo along with a beard oil will lead to a healthier and well-managed beard.
How Often Should I Wash My Beard With Beard Shampoo?
It is generally agreed that it is not necessary to wash your beard every day. In fact, many would argue that you shouldn’t wash your beard every day. A good rule of thumb would be to wash your beard every couple of days. It will retain its proper levels of sebum while at the same time washing away the dirt particles it collects.
